Overview Overview[]

Level 0 is the first level of Apeirophobia. The level is a maze full of yellow walls, dark yellow carpet, and a few arrows scratched on the walls that may lead to the exit. In harder difficulty's, the arrows might be fake.

Pencil Description

Level 0 is a large maze composed of a repeating yellow, moist carpet floor, and a mono-yellow wallpaper decorated like the typical Backrooms walls. The ceiling is an averagely tiled ceiling with constantly buzzing fluorescent light sources dotted around the map. Occasionally, these lights may be colored differently in specific areas, occasionally appearing as blue, red, and even green. Scattered throughout the level are many miscellaneous objects, such as power outlets and industrial ladders.

Objective Objective

The objective in this Level is to simply find the exit. Players will start by wandering around until eventually ending up at a ladder that leads to a vent in a wall. Climbing this ladder and entering the vent will lead to the player escaping the level and entering Level 1.

Core Simulations Cores (2)

  • One is right behind Ben's Chair.
  • One is at the end of a really long hallway.

Skull Entities (4)

Howler[]

The Howler is an entity that randomly roams the level. When it spots the player, it will begin a chase; If caught, the player will be jumpscared and killed. In Nightmare Mode, the Howler's base speed is boosted, increasing the difficulty of escape.

Cameraman[]

Similar to the Howler, the Cameraman is an entity that also randomly roams the level. When it spots the player, it will let out a loud screech and emit blue shockwaves, making blurring nearby players' screens. This screech also alerts the Howler, who will come rushing to that exact location. Like the Howler, it also begins a chase; If caught, the player will be jumpscared and killed.

Lost Soul[]

The Lost Soul is a secret entity located in a secret room in Level 0. When entering this secret room, the entity can be seen dead. It can be if speculated this entity is a player, as it seems to resemble the shape of one.

Phantom Smiler[]

The Phantom Smiler is an entity that continuously stalks the player throughout Level 1. Randomly, it may appear at any time near the player. If the player spots the Phantom Smiler, it will jumpscare them; However, the player will not die, as the Phantom Smiler cannot physically harm the Player.

Badge Badges (2)

BEN[]

This badge can be obtained by finding a red chair.
If lucky, the player could spawn near this chair, resulting in obtaining the badge easily.

The Lost Soul[]

This badge can be obtained by finding a thin crack somewhere near the exit in a wall, which the player can barely slide into. The player can the see something that looks like a deceased person; If approached, the "Lost Soul" badge will be obtained.

Note Notes (1)

There is only one note in the entirety of Level 0. It shows the player running to a ladder that gives access to a vent in the wall, but the player has an entity running after them, with this entity being crossed out. There used to be text on the note saying "THERE'S MORE!!!" before the 3.X update.

Origin Origin

Level 0 is based upon Level 0 of the Backrooms. The following excerpts from the official Backrooms wiki describe the level.

The Backrooms[]

"If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms, where it’s nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in. God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you."

Level 0: "The Lobby"[]

Level 0 is an expansive non-Euclidean space, resembling the back rooms of a commercial building. All rooms in Level 0 share the same superficial features, such as worn mono-yellow wallpaper, old moist carpet, scattered electrical outlets, and inconsistently-placed fluorescent lighting. Aside from these common features, no two rooms within the level are identical in layout.

Script Cutscene Transcript

Director: Camera rolling.
Director: Action!
Director: Alright, cut cut. That was good, that was good guys, alright, yea, that was good. I'm thinking that we get a wide angle and then we’re done, alright?
The Player: Yeah.
The Player: Okay, how much?
Director: Uh, a little more.
The Player: WOAH

Question Trivia

  • This is the first level to feature three entities.
    • Prior to Pre-Alpha 1.0, there were only two entities, those being the old version of the Howler and Phantom Smiler.
    • Prior to Pre-Alpha 1.0., there was no dialogue for getting jumpscared by the Phantom Smiler. Despite showing the subtitles, there was no voice actor for getting jumpscare by the Phantom Smiler.
  • The exit vent will always appear in one of the four corners of the map.
  • The appearance of this level is inspired by the original 4chan post, while the drawings on the wall, as well as the entity itself, are inspired by Kane Pixels' video.
  • This is the only level to have two Badges, BEN and The Lost Soul.
  • There is a dead body hidden in a small room on this map. It can only be accessed through a small crack in the wall that the Player has to squeeze through. This place is located somewhere around the middle of the map.
    • As of Pre-Alpha 1.0, the dead body is usually inaccessible as many Players are too big to squeeze through the crack, but this has now been fixed.
    • Touching the body will reward the Player with The Lost Soul Badge.
    • There is a green light inside this room that casts light out onto the hall before it, so try to look for the green light that shines through the crack.
  • Ben's chair can be found in this level, in the southeast corner of the map.
    • Finding his chair rewards the Player with the BEN Badge as long as they get close enough to it.
    • This is a reference to a viral meme video of Ben in the Backrooms.
      • The stain in front of the chair is also a reference to the Howler and kidnapping ben at the end of said video.
  • Meanwhile, playing in nightmare mode, the arrows will anomalously change to the arrows with a sign following into it saying "Exit?".
  • This level is based of Level 0 of the Backrooms Wikidot and the Backrooms Fandom Wiki.
    • This is also based off of Kane Pixels' Backrooms Level.
  • This level is the first footage of the Backrooms in real life.
  • Level 16 is extremely similar to this level in terms of design, sharing the same yellow floors and Wallpaper. The only and major difference between Level 0 and Level 16 is that Level 16 is covered in an unnamed black substance, and some of the pillars and walls are fallen over.
    • Prior to update 3.9, Level 16 swaps the spawn location and the exit, so now you spawn on the northern side of the map, and have find items by following arrows.
  • During the Mettalica x Apeirophobia event, level 0 had 3 obtainable badges making it the most badges you can get in a single level.
